Crypto finance firms widely share one mission statement: to offer a platform that enables retail and institutional crypto market participants to trade, invest, finance, and earn crypto. We’ve thought long and hard about the best way to pool our integrated services for all market participants. We’re proud to announce that this vision has materialized in our latest offering: the Amber App.

It’s time to drive forward the democratization of crypto finance.

What we’re witnessing today in crypto finance is a rapid shift from pure-play to integrated crypto finance services. The adapt or…

As the Federal Reserve takes hold of the economy by its strings, the financial crisis playbook has fast become the de facto economic manual. This marionette performance is one that we’ve all seen before, but this time the Fed has a dancing partner — the U.S. government. The Fed’s money-printing scheme alone isn’t sufficient to engineer a bailout galore. This type of lockstep monetary and fiscal relief can only mean one thing: the financial markets are being nationalised.

The high price tag for these fiscal measures means a more massive U.S. budget deficit. After all, the record-setting economic relief bill…

“Fragility is the quality of things that are vulnerable to volatility” — Nassim Nicholas Taleb

The view is never pretty on the front lines of a volatile economy. There is a lifecycle to all capital markets — what goes up must come down. This time is no exception. Coming out of the longest bull market in history, we now find ourselves in a fragile global economy staring mercilessly at a swinging wrecking ball.

The swinging has…

Structured thinkers have an undying appreciation for procedure and logic. I can attest.

The spirit of the startup world is all about experimental design. It comes as no surprise, then, that creativity takes centre stage. What is business building if not working with the reality that change is the only constant variable. Society expects startups to pivot and mould, so structured thinkers should be encouraged to lean into boundless creativity.

Builders in the startup crypto ecosystem all share one thing in common: creative problem-solving. Few might look at crypto wallet providers and trading firms and deduce that they share overlapping…

Btw, I loved this stuff as a kid.

Once upon a time…

Cap’n crunch sailed the vast sea of liquidity, which was abundant with companies supported by strong balance sheets and showing upward trending financial projections 📈. That is, until a sudden global health pandemic struck land and sea, sending these companies into a whirlwind of uncertainty.

Liquidity in crisis

The narrative of this impending global recession is changing daily, but a constant theme seems to be emerging: this crisis (should it fully materialise) will be about the absence of balance sheet liquidity, not about financial solvency (at least for now). …

Black Thursday (March 12, 2020) will be remembered as the day that brought the largest stress test to the ‘modern’ DeFi ecosystem.

The story? Liquidations. $25m of collateral was liquidated across the leading DeFi lending protocols — Maker, Compound, and dYdX —in just the last month. Roughly $10m of that amount was liquidated on a single day on March 12 , with a majority of liquidations in ETH.

Collateral Liquidated

Ask anyone — my view about the future and humanity is usually fairly optimistic. I believe that there is no conflict, no epidemic, no market correction humanity cannot recover from. Of course this is not to diminish the reality that each of these setbacks impacts the “haves” and “have nots” to a different degree, but that is an age-old discussion about economic and wealth inequality that I will not attempt to mull over in this post. …

Earlier this week the Federal Reserve cut the federal funds rate by half a percent lowering the interest rate target between 1–1.25%. The effective fed funds rate (the volume weighted median of the inter-bank lending rates) now stands at 1.58%, a steep 82bp cut from this time last year. (Remember the Fed has generally been tightening — increasing the fed funds rate — since December 2015). Lowering the fed funds rate affects inter-bank lending rates and the impact trickles down to the consumer through lower yields on money market accounts and lower interest on savings. Will the US economy find…

We spend a lot of time thinking about crypto market infrastructure.

The development of market infrastructure is indicative of the institutionalization growth curve. The pace of building in this space has been astonishing. We are seeing the emergence of more institutional-grade market infrastructure from qualified custodians to trade execution platforms and derivatives exchange venues. We believe the more robust the infrastructure, the more investable crypto becomes as an alternative asset class. Institutional participation is really the amassing of retail participation and more…

2019 was a formative year for the crypto markets.

Just have a look at business models — the pulse of change. From pure-play services to integrated platforms. From single public chains to cross-chain interoperability. Companies and projects are not only focused on building services and shipping products. They are also forming partnerships, acquiring other companies and building out ecosystems. As decentralized finance (DeFi)* matures, projects are finding more ways to leverage the nature of composability: the ability of applications to integrate with one another. Applications are building on top of and alongside one another. New incentive mechanisms are being explored from staking to trade-driven mining. …
